Thursday January 6th

The day began at around 730 as I awoke to type up our adventures from the day before. The boys slept til 830 and Krista would have slept til noon if we hadn’t gotten moving. After a couple pieces of toast and cereal, we piled into Ronnie’s car and headed off for a day of adventurous touring of Wellington – the capital city of New Zealand.
We started by heading to a house near downtown that Krista lived in when she was aged 8-11. The address was 12 Marewa Road. The outside seemed very similar and we took some photos of the outside and view over the harbour and the airport. Krista was too chicken to ring the doorbell and ask for a tour but her very capable husband did so. Keith Smith opened the door and after explaining our situation was more than willing to give us the grand tour and the changes that had been done over the last 30 years. Krista remembered it being so much larger when she was a child, but had many memories of rooms and the backyard.  After thanking Keith, we headed to Krista’s second school in Hataitai. She found a couple classrooms she attended and remembered some adventures as a child.
We left and headed to Miramar and had a snack at the Chocolate Frog cafĂ© inside a garden centre. The boys split some pizza and Darren/Krista had a cheese scone.  Ronnie then took us to a souvenir shop where we picked up some NZ trinkets and gifts for our Canadian friends and relatives. We left there and headed to the house where Krista lived from age 3-8 at 23 Totrua Road. We took a few photos and headed to Krista’s first school at Worser Bay and took some more photos. The swimming pool is no longer there and there are many additions but some rooms are still the very same. We drove past a church where Krista had First Communion and headed to a community where the Wellington Cable Car was situated.
We toured the Cable Car museum and then rode it down to city centre where we did some shopping at a bookstore for a couple of calendars, grabbed a bite to eat at McDonald’s and headed back up the Cable Car to our car. We drove to another area of the city where the Legislature buildings were. We took some photos in front of the ‘beehive’ and walked a block to the Catholic Cathedral for a few minutes. After a brief stop there, we headed back to the car and home again for a brief rest before our bbq began.
No sooner had we gotten home did our first guests arrive. Roger and Ronnie’s son Simon, wife Lana and children Nikkita, Cameron and Imogen arrived. The boys finally had some kids to play with and they began to make a stir. Shortly after, Roger and Ronnie’s daughter Sarah arrived with husband Luke and children Moses and Nico. With all the children running around, we were all extremely busy keeping them occupied without too much wrestling. We eventually settled down for an extremely delicious bbq of hamburgers and sausages with salad. The children ate quickly and were off again while the parents enjoyed some great company in the beautiful sitting room overlooking the ocean. After a great visit and some tv to calm the little ones, Sarah and Simon and families made their way home with kids in pyjamas. We got Nicholas and Jacob to bed and sighed a deep sigh of relief, had some brief conversation with our hosts and called it a night. A very productive day indeed!
